Si Sook Kumo grew up in a family where martial art is a part of life. Her relatives practised Wing Chun and other forms of Wu Shu and martial arts. Si sook Kumo naturally grew interest in martial arts and self defence at a young age. She learnt Tae Kwon Do, boxing and fencing but never endeavoured to practice Wing Chun as she thought Wing Chun’s Fook Sau looked like chicken dance.
In recent years, Si Sook Kumo was inspired by Bruce Lee’s life story, movies and philosophy and subsequently by his Wing Chun instructor Ip Man and began her training in Practical Wing Chun.
Si Sook Kumo’s experiences with Practical Wing Chun provided her the opportunity to widen her scope of understanding in the Wing Chun arena. She learnt one of the most important things in Wing Chun and that is the use of manipulation against force, energy and power.
The ideals, theories and logic behind the system of Practical Wing Chun reflect in one of her favourite Bruce Lee’s philosophical quotes:
‘Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a tea pot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.’
